Covid 19 has ushered in what I have defined as “Zoom” Decor.  What’s that you say?  It’s the ability to instantly become Mrs. Kravitz the nosy neighbor on “Bewitched” (I know I’m dating myself).  Come on, lets be honest–you can’t help but find yourself checking your screen buddy’s house out.

I’m sure you’ve heard the old adage that when you meet someone for the first time–you form up to 35 different impressions about them.  Well, you’re doing the same thing when you’re engaged on your “Zoom” call.  Suddenly, your attention zooms in on the person sitting in front of a background.  That background of where they are living reveals  plenty of information about them.  (No kidding)!   It may be no problem wearing pajama pants from the waist down, but you can’t help seeing what is lurking behind the people you’re talking to online.   Whether it be what kind of paint color is on the walls?  Do the draperies compliment the room?  Whose pictures are posted on the wall, or boy that bookcase sure can use some tiding up–it all boils down to impressions.   So, what does the background of your “Zoom” call say about you?  I’ve come up with these categories:

The Mess–looks like a bomb when off & they  really don’t care who knows it.

Perfectionist–Every detail down to the position of what is captured on screen is scrutinized.

The CEO–Wow there’s some money that went into this decor, because it looks like something out of a magazine.

Possibilities–This place has potential–beautiful bookcase, lovely pictures on display, good lighting–stuff designers can easily tweak into a show house material.

SOS–Send designer help immediately!   I just threw all this stuff together & it really is ugly.

Well folks, Zoom is a new phenomenon that’s not going away soon.  We may have gotten away from in person meetings, but that first impression is here to stay, it’s just come in a different format.  You’ve been confined to that room long enough.  It’s time to make some updates, so call a designer to help you with some “Zoom” decor advice:))
